Marsden offers an ideal setting out point for a wide variety of easy and not so easy walks on the National Trust Estate. The National Trust also arrange guided tours throughout the year - check their website for latest details.

Whether arriving at The Tunnel End Inn after a long hard walk across the moors or an easier stroll along the canal from the village, you'll find a warm welcome awaits you.

When visiting the Tunnel End Inn Bev and Gary always recommend the local walks which range from easy strolls to more difficult parts of the Pennine Way.

We are situated on the edge of the National Trust's Marsden Moor Estate, the northern boundary of the Peak District National Park. Details of local events can be found below. In addition, all of the National Park is only a short drive away.

There are many routed walks that start in or pass through Marsden. The National Trust publish a guide for six of these along with a Heritage Trail that takes in many sites of historic importance from the Roman age through to the Industrial Revolution that left its marks on the Valley in the form of the canal, railway and local mills.

There are also many low level walks and rambles in and around the village and following the canal along the Colne Valley to Slaithwaite (pronounced Slawit locally). Please ask us for a copy of the Marsden and Tunnel End Trail Guide or other tourist literature. Also see our 'Marsden Info' page for more information.

Ordnance Survey maps that cover the area : Landranger 110, Explorer OL21.

Bev keeps all local bus, train and boat information behind the bar. Just ask! And, of course, if you wish to stay with us while enjoying the area please click on 'Stay With Us' for more details.

The 5,685 acre estate is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and home to a large number of moorland birds including the golden plover, red grouse, pheasant, curlew and twite. Pairs of hawks have been spotted in the area recently.

The National Trust also have a visitor centre in Marsden and run a series of events throughout the year including guided walks, theme days and childrens events. You can also become a Conservation Volunteer and help out at these days and other conservation events taking place in the area.

Please note that guided walks must be booked in advance.

Also within easy reach of the Tunnel End Inn are several filming locations and the historic towns of West Yorkshire. Among those made famous by TV production crews are Holmfirth (Last of the Summer Wine) and Marsden itself (an outside location for ITV's Where The Heart Is and BBC's League of Gentlemen).

Huddersfield, Britain's largest non-city status town, is a 10 minute train journey (7 miles) and both Leeds and Manchester are easily accessible by a regular train service.
